Real People. Real Places. Real History.
Homestead History, a companion series to Homestead Readers, brings Canadian history to life through true stories of children growing up on a farm in the 1930s and 1940s. Set on a Saskatchewan farm near Moose Jaw, these stories follow the Tysdal children. Canadian history becomes personal, relatable, and meaningful through the experiences of these children and their family.
These are not textbook passages or simplified summaries. These living books share true Canadian history through the everyday experiences of children as they work on the farm, help their families, face challenges, and learn responsibility. The stories naturally reflect a way of life shaped by responsibility, perseverance, and cooperation. Many of the illustrations are created from real photographs of the people and places in the stories, helping children visually step into the time period and connect more deeply with the history they are reading.
Designed as a companion series to Homestead Readers, each Homestead History book is intended to be read after the corresponding Homestead Readers level. The reading skills children learn in Homestead Readers are reinforced and strengthened through the stories in Homestead History, giving students meaningful practice with the same phonics patterns in a historical context. While the two series complement each other naturally, Homestead History can also be used independently as Canadian history readers for developing readers.
Each book features a map of the real places found in the stories and an authentic photograph of the children, bringing the stories and their historical setting to life.
