Our beginning readers were thrilled to read the Homestead Readers. We love that they are totally decodable. We can give the readers to our students with confidence of their high interest in the stories while reinforcing their reading skills. The younger readers felt that they were reading a “real ” book and not just another work sheet. We feel that the stories will be motivating for them to read while building their confidence. The added bonus of the support handouts on the website makes our job easier.
These are the best readers! While reading these readers, the phonics is taught gradually for the child to keep up, and help instill the phonic principles they have already learned. All the stories are exciting, sweet, and keep my oldest wanting to keep reading them. They are her first choice (and mine) for readers!
The stories themselves are lovely, and show the wide range of farm and family life. I am very thankful to have them, and I will be buying the next set for next year as we are nearly done them.
Homestead Readers use time-tested phonics which give children the decoding skills needed to become independent, capable readers. This allows them to decode new words in the future. Homestead Readers progress through well thought-out phonics steps to give a child mastery of one skill before moving on to another skill. Each book explains how to go about teaching a child to decode the words that use the new phonetic concept for that book.
Kids love to read about real kids doing real things. Catch a child’s attention with stories about horses, dogs, trucks, big machinery, outdoor adventures, and more.
Homestead History is a companion series to Homestead Readers that brings Canadian history to life through true stories of children growing up on a Saskatchewan farm near Moose Jaw in the 1930s and 1940s. Following the Tysdal family through real events in real places, history is told through everyday family life, making the past feel personal, relatable, and meaningful to young readers.
Designed to follow each of the Homestead Readers Levels 8–15, each Homestead History book reinforces the same phonics skills through engaging historical stories. The series provides meaningful reading practice in a real-world context and can be used alongside Homestead Readers or on its own as Canadian history readers for developing students.
When your child is ready for the next step, continue the journey with Detective Grant and Co. which is a historical mystery series designed specifically for new chapter book readers.
With short chapters and photo illustrations, this series bridges the gap between phonics readers and longer novels. As readers follow a young boy uncovering mysteries from the past, they will strengthen their reading skills while discovering that history can be exciting and worth exploring.
